Stuttering
Stuttering & Fluency Disorders
Struggling to produce smooth, fluent speech can be frustrating and emotionally challenging for both children and their families. Stuttering may cause a child to repeat sounds or words, prolong sounds, or become “stuck” while speaking. Over time, these experiences can lead to anxiety, avoidance of speaking situations, and decreased confidence in the classroom, with friends, or during everyday conversations.
At Ponte Vedra Speech, Language, and Learning, we provide a supportive, encouraging environment where children can develop confidence while learning strategies to improve communication. We serve as trusted guides throughout the therapy process, helping each child understand their unique speech pattern and build the skills needed to communicate more comfortably and effectively.
Therapy begins by teaching evidence-based fluency strategies that help promote smoother speech, reduce moments of stuttering, and increase a child’s ability to communicate successfully when disfluencies occur. As children become more confident with these techniques, we gradually increase the complexity of speaking situations to help them transfer these skills into everyday life.
Treatment may include:
-
Strategies to improve speech fluency
-
Techniques for managing moments of stuttering
-
Building confidence and reducing communication anxiety
-
Practicing speaking in a variety of real-life situations
-
Developing self-advocacy and positive communication habits
With each family’s permission, we also provide supervised opportunities to practice these skills outside the therapy room. Depending on the child’s goals, this may include making phone calls, ordering at restaurants, asking questions in stores, or participating in other everyday interactions. These real-world experiences help children gain confidence and successfully carry over their new communication skills into daily life.
Our goal is not simply to reduce stuttering, but to help every child become a confident communicator who feels comfortable expressing themselves in any situation.
