Social Communication (Pragmatic Language)

Does your child struggle to make or maintain friendships? Do they frequently misunderstand social situations, miss jokes or sarcasm, or have difficulty interpreting facial expressions, body language, or tone of voice? While some children have strong vocabulary and grammar skills, they may still experience significant challenges using language effectively in everyday social interactions.

Children with social communication difficulties may have trouble starting or maintaining conversations, taking turns during discussions, staying on topic, understanding another person’s perspective, or recognizing unspoken social rules. These challenges can affect relationships with peers, classroom participation, and overall confidence.

Because many of these children perform well on traditional language assessments, they often do not qualify for speech-language services through the school system. However, their social communication challenges are very real and can have a lasting impact on both academic and social success.

At Ponte Vedra Speech, Language, and Learning, we have extensive experience evaluating and treating children with Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder and other social language challenges. Through engaging, individualized therapy sessions, we help children develop the skills they need to communicate more effectively and confidently with others.

Starting, maintaining, and ending conversations
Reading facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice
Understanding social cues and unwritten social rules
Perspective taking and developing empathy
Social problem-solving and conflict resolution
Interpreting humor, figurative language, and sarcasm
Building confidence in peer interactions and group settings
